The inaugural edition of the MAAAP Symposium is presented by The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) Arts Administration and Policy department in a virtual format. Presenters are part of the 2021 graduating class of the Arts Administration and Policy M.A. It celebrates the latest works by emerging arts and cultural professionals, and acknowledges their exploratory spirit during the tumultuous times of the global pandemic. It engages diverse participants with a wide spectrum of themes that are of great significance to both our emerging professionals and the future of the industries. We invite all participants to embark on an exploration of digital arts administration with an emphasis on unique storytelling modes, and investigate the affordances of technology in engagement and network building.

4:15 - 4:45 PM CST Arts, Structure, Money: Rebecca Haley & Hayley Blackstone in Conversation with Tat Scott
Rebecca Haley is a third-year graduate student in the Arts Administration & Policy and Art History dual degree program at SAIC who envisions her career working to directly support artists and cultural institutions. Originally from Philadelphia, she received her BA in the History of Art and Architecture from Boston University and worked in research, communications and strategic engagement at Pace Gallery in New York prior to attending graduate school. She has previously worked in programming, education and development at organizations such as Philadelphia Contemporary, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Rebecca’s research is primarily focused on the relationships between artists and institutions; her thesis explores the complicated dynamics between trusteeship, private wealth, and board governance at art museums, with particular attention to the historical relationship between trustees and museums as well as recent controversies surrounding trustees and their sources of wealth. She is currently the Development Assistant at United States Artists, and will join full-time as Development Coordinator in June 2021.

Hayley-Jane Blackstone is a cultural professional and writer with experience in Special Collections, curatorial practice, and event programming. She is the registrar at Chicago based gallery Corbett vs. Dempsey. In the Arts Administration & Policy Department, she is researching theories of archival practice and collections management to supplement her focus on artist-run activity in Chicago and the US. Her thesis work discusses the history and legacy of one of Chicago's most influential alternative art spaces, Randolph Street Gallery, within the context of the gallery's public art initiatives over two decades.

Karla Aguiñiga is a transfronteriza (Mexican/American) artist, educator, and curator originally from Tijuana, Mexico now based in Los Angeles. Her work as an arts administrator is driven by a desire to create pathways for artists of color of all ages. Her curatorial work includes “Fantasies and Fallacies” (2017) and “Dual Vision” (2018) at the Mexican Center for Culture and Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles. She has previously held positions at the Chicago Architecture Biennial, Material Art Fair (Mexico City), Hammer Museum, and is currently working for the Chicago Artist Coalition.

Maura has a comprehensive understanding of the hospitality and arts worlds and recognizes the importance of storytelling and placemaking within these spaces. She currently works with art advising groups like CNL Projects and Johalla Projects in Chicago.

She studied viola for fifteen years before turning her attention to arts administration, with a focus on accessibility and education. Before her arrival to Chicago, she worked at the National Museum of Art in Mexico and the University Museum of Contemporary Art. She was the Coordinator of Communication and Public Relations of the Mexican sculptor Jorge Marín and the Studio Manager of the artist Tania Candiani. She has collaborated with the Office for Cultural Affairs at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Gallery Weekend CDMX, Material Art Fair, and the Hyde Park Jazz Festival. Currently, she is exploring performance as part of her artistic practice. She works as the Communication Fellow at the Field Foundation of Illinois and as a Graduate Curatorial Assistant at SAIC Galleries.
